Although it might be the international break that steals most of this weekend’s headlines, we are still treated to a string of eye-catching domestic affairs. With another stacked schedule from across Europe throughout Saturday, we have found a trio of helpful tips that are worth taking note of.
Saturday September 9th
BST 15:00 Exeter vs Leyton Orient
While Exeter might have been disappointed after only mustering a bottom-half finish last season, Saturday’s hosts have certainly come flying out of the traps this time around. Last seen putting in another rugged display as they landed a 1-0 victory away at Burton, it is no secret that Gary Caldwell’s men have their sights set on securing a shock Championship ticket in 2024. With the mood around St. James’ Park at a real high, the Grecians have now won each of their last four appearances on the bounce. Likewise, extending on their EFL Cup run on August 29th when edging past Stevenage, the Devon-based outfit have also suffered just a single defeat from their eight showdowns since opening up the 2023/24 campaign. Riding what has been a recent wave of momentum, there is no doubt that Exeter will be looking to lay down another League One marker this weekend. With their extended purple patch highlighted by a 2-1 win at home against Reading last month, Caldwell’s men should be relishing Leyton Orient’s arrival here. On the flip side, while Saturday’s guests might have impressed many as they booked their third-tier return over the summer, the O’s are in the midst of a real struggle. Last seen earlier in the week getting hit with a 2-1 loss away at Gillingham while on EFL Trophy duties, Richie Wellens’ men have lost six of their opening eight appearances across all formats since opening the new campaign. Showing some extended issues on the road, the Orient certainly face a stern challenge here.
Tip: Exeter win Over 1.5 goals @ 5/4
15:00 Swindon vs Sutton
While Swindon might have been disappointed after missing out on a real chance last weekend as they eventually had to settle for a 0-0 stalemate away at Doncaster, the Robins will be smelling the chance to claim an immediate response here. With their sights set on mounting a genuine play-off charge this time around, Saturday’s hosts are unbeaten in each of their opening five League Two appearances since opening up the 2023/24 campaign. Signing off August with a rampant display as they cruised their way to a stellar 6-0 romp against Crawley, the one-time Newport boss will also be excited to make a return to the County Ground here. Last seen in front of their own supporters hitting Crawley for six, it should also be noted that Swindon have notched 10 strikes in just their opening three home fixtures across all competitions. Opening this weekend’s showdown sat just a single point adrift of breaking into the top-six, Flynn’s side will be looking to cash in on a struggling Sutton. Making an immediate return to losing ways last weekend as they suffered a worrying 1-0 loss at home against Forest Green, the Yellows are dealing with a string of issues. On a run that is highlighted by a 3-1 drumming at the hands of Newport on August 26th, Saturday’s guests have now lost five of their previous six appearances across all competitions. Given the huge recent gulf in class, we are expecting a home victory here.
Tip: Swindon win @ 19/20
20:00 Leganes vs Huesca
Although Leganes might have limped their way over the finish line last season as they eventually had to settle for a bottom-half finish, Saturday’s hosts have made a string of improvements since returning from the summer break. Last seen putting in another eye-catching display as they landed a 1-0 victor away at Eibar, El Lega have continued to gain a string of recent praise. In fact, along with signing off August with a deserved 2-0 victory at home against Albacete, Borja Jimenez’s men have now won each of their last three straight Segunda appearances by an aggregate score of 5-0. Certainly looking to make another second-tier statement this weekend, the Madrid-based outfit open up this weekend’s fixtures sat just a single point adrift of breaking into the automatic promotion spots. Likewise, shipping just a single strike since opening the 2023/24 campaign, Leganes will also be excited by an eye-catching record against Saturday’s guests. Including a 2-1 win when they welcomed Huesca to town back on May 5th, Jimenez’s men have won three of their last four meetings against the Segunda strugglers. Signing off last season by winning just one of their final seven appearances, Cuco Ziganda’s men have once again struggled to find any kind of stability since opening proceedings last month. Yet to land a single win from any of their opening four second-tier contests, it should also be noted that Huesca have recorded just a single away victory over the past 11 months.
